February WordPress Meetup: Theme UX and JavaScript

Where: 1800 Massachusetts Ave NW, 2nd Floor, Washington, DC

When: 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM

For our February meetup, we’re doing our standard two speaker format. Talk descriptions and bios below!

“Themes are for Users” – David A. Kennedy (@davidakennedy)

Good user experience in WordPress themes can make the difference between frustrated or happy users. Yet, it’s often overlooked. A solid user experience can feel just right, creating sound expectations and delight. We still see themes with misleading screenshots and demos. Themes with tons of options and complex setups too. This leaves users with false hopes and countless ways to fail. In this talk, we’ll explore user research, theme setup, theme options and more. By the end, you’ll know what makes up a theme’s user experience, and how to set your users up for success.

David A. Kennedy works as a Theminator at Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and many other fine web products. He wrangles themes for WordPress.com, making them the best they can be and ensuring everyone can find a theme they love. He’s also an accessibility evangelist who loves the open web and open source code. He contributes to WordPress Core, the WordPress Accessibility Team and the Underscores starter theme.
“JavaScript <3 WordPress” – Solomon Scott (@SolomonSScott)

Matt Mullenweg challenged the WordPress community to learn JavaScript. So, where do you start? It begins with maintainable, readable and reusable JavaScript. Learn some of the most commonly used design patterns that will help you become a better developer and help you to navigate the growing JavaScript environment.

Solomon lives in Washington, D.C. He’s a comic book lover, honorary X-Man and Walking Dead head. Web development and design has been his obsession and passion for over 5 years and growing without any sign of slowing down. He believes that everyone involved in a website should have a great experience, from the client, to the user, to the designer. Solomon currently works at idfive.

As always, food and drink will be sponsored by CHIEF.
